Battle of the Pros took place at the Renzo Gracie Academy yesterday in Brooklyn, NY. The event featured an 8-man one night pro tournament. When it was all said and done Troy Sheridan of Team Ultimate in Toronto, Canada walked away with the tournament victory.
In the opening round of the tournament Rafael Machado defeated Nate Chambers by unanimous decision, Troy Sheridan defeated Peter Kaljevic by unanimous decision, and Deshawn Robinson knocked out Turan Hasanov with a flying knee to advance to the semi-finals. Villi Bello and Mervin Rodriguez fought to a no contest after Rodriguez was hit in the groin and could not continue. Although it seemed that Rodriguez was actually hit in the stomach and not the groin the no contest ruling stood, but since Rodriguez could not continue Bello advanced in the tournament.
In the semi-finals Bello scored a second round (T)KO over Machado to advance to the finals. Sheridan punched his ticket to the finals after surviving an early onslaught from Robinson that seemed to have him in trouble. Sheridan then turned the tables by viciously knocking out Robinson when he dropped his hands getting flashy.
In the tournament final Bello was the aggressor in the first round, putting the pressure on Sheridan. In rounds two and three, however, Sheridan began to walk Bello down and started to pull ahead the cards. Both fighters connected with well with their strikes and in the end the judges awarded Sheridan the unanimous decision win.
